Board and Train in El Paso, TX: A Desert Perspective

El Paso is far from the rest of Texas, in the Mountain Time Zone, in the Chihuahuan Desert. Planning a stay here starts with a plain look at distance and dry heat.

The city is closer to Phoenix, Santa Fe and Los Angeles than to Austin, and it lies on the Rio Grande across from Ciudad Juarez. Because other large Texas cities are many hours away, most owners look for programs nearby. If you are considering a trainer outside the area, think carefully about the trip and ask who would handle the handoff lesson.

The Franklin Mountains reach into the city and almost split it in two. Franklin Mountains State Park covers more than 24,000 acres entirely within city limits, and foothill streets run right up to the slopes. Dry desert air, about 8.8 inches of rain a year and spring dust storms from March to early May change how dogs feel outside. Ask how a program manages hot pavement, shade and dusty days.

Interstate 10 runs north of central El Paso, and Montana Avenue marks the northern edge of the northeast area. After a stay, practice early in the day, before the pavement bakes. Check paws, offer water often and watch for signs of heat stress. Posted rules at parks and trailheads vary, and trail conditions can change quickly in the desert, so read the signs before you go.

Good questions

Before you begin.

How does desert weather affect a stay?

It affects outdoor time, paw care and hydration. Ask how the trainer handles heat, dust and cold nights.

Are there programs close to El Paso?

From here, availability is unknown. Ask any trainer you contact.

Will distance add to the cost?

It can. The base planning band is $1,500 to $2,500+ for two to three weeks, and travel or a home visit would be extra.
