Board and Train in Houston, TX: What Owners Should Weigh

Houston is flat, humid and spread over three counties. Weather and distance shape a stay here more than in most Texas cities.

The city lies mostly in Harris County, with parts reaching into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties, on a flat Gulf coastal plain once covered in grassland, forest and marsh. Buffalo Bayou runs through downtown, and a web of drainage channels carries water out after storms. Rainfall averages about 52 inches a year and flooding is a recurring risk, so ask any program what its plan is for severe weather.

Heat is the other constant. Houston sees more than 100 days a year at or above 90 degrees, and southerly winds carry Gulf moisture that makes it feel heavier. In a stay, that means outdoor sessions should be short and shaded, with water close. Ask where dogs rest during the hot part of the day and whether the space is air conditioned or only fan cooled.

Distance is a real issue. Interstate 610 circles the inner city, Beltway 8 sits roughly ten miles out and the Grand Parkway about 25, so a program on the far side of the metro can mean an hour or more of driving. Weigh the trip against the benefits, and ask whether a handoff lesson can happen nearer to home. Afterward, walks along local paths work best at dawn.

Good questions

Before you begin.

How should a program handle Houston storms?

Ask for a plan covering power loss, flooding and evacuation, and how owners are told if something changes.

Is a far-away program worth the drive?

Sometimes. Compare the quality of care, the handoff plan and the travel time before choosing.

What would a stay cost for a Houston dog?

Think of $1,500 to $2,500+ as the usual planning band for two to three weeks. Each trainer decides the real figure.
