Cameron Park and the Brazos River riverwalk

The city covers about 101 square miles, of which nearly 12 percent is water, including the Brazos River and Lake Waco. Interstate 35 runs through town, State Highway 6 links it to Bryan and Houston, and U.S. 84 serves as the main east-west route. Dallas lies up the interstate and Austin down it, so owners can compare programs in either direction.

Cameron Park, a 416-acre urban park, holds a trail system designated a National Recreation Trail in 2009, and a seven-mile riverwalk follows both banks of the Brazos. These are fine places to practice after a stay, but they are busy on nice days. Go early, keep your dog close and give joggers and cyclists room. Read the posted rules at each trail before you start.

Summers are hot, humid and long, and the record high is 114 degrees. During a stay, ask how outdoor time is scheduled and where dogs rest. At home, rebuild routines slowly. Practice the same short cues in the same quiet spots, then add distance and distraction in small steps. A written plan from the trainer helps keep everyone in the household on the same page.

One more tip for a central location: visit more than once if you can. Seeing a program on two different days shows how the space and the people behave when they are not expecting you, which is the most honest preview you can get.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Should I choose a program in Dallas or Austin?

Either may work. Compare daily schedules, overnight care, handoff plans and total price.

Where can I walk my dog once it is back?

Cameron Park and the riverwalk are options. Go at quiet times and follow posted rules.

Do central Texas programs cost more or less?

No fixed pattern exists. The planning band is $1,500 to $2,500+ for two to three weeks, and inclusions drive the difference.
